YMCA Parent/Child Swim Lessons

The Hamden North Haven YMCA Swimming Lesson program is a great way for your swimmers to get acclimated to the water at any point throughout the year.  Whether you are in Hamden, North Haven, Bethany, or any of the surrounding towns, the YMCA is easily accessible and strives to provide the best service and consistency with their swimming program.  Our goal is to make sure that your swimmers have fun but learn as much as they can at the same time!

Parent (Guardian) and Child Lessons

  • Children Ages 6 months – 3 years old
  • Maximum 1 instructor to 12 student ratio (exception is the Seahorse level which is a 1: 6 ratio)
  • Classes run for 30 minutes
  • Parents are in the water (the exception is the Seahorse level which will transition the parent out of the water during the session)

Shrimp/Kipper/Inia/Perch: From ages 6 months to 36 months, these lessons are truly meant to acclimate the children to the water while having a great time singing songs and playing with their parents and the instructor.  Parents will learn the basics on how to enter different style pools, how to help teach their children basic swimming skills, and much much more!  Our goal is to get the children comfortable enough to enter the Seahorse level when they turn 2 1/2 years old or soon after.

Seahorse: (ages 2 ½ – 5 years old) This is a transitional class from the traditional parent and child swimming lesson to a conventional group lesson.  Independent and energetic kids who will swim alone with flotation devices and are ok with separation from parent/guardian will do great in this class.  This is designed to acclimate the children to the instructor gradually in order to prepare them for a true Pike or Eel I swimming lesson.
