The Y – Providing Swim Lesson Opportunities For All

Hamden, CT – Even with winter rapidly approaching, the Hamden-North Haven YMCA is dedicated to providing swim lesson opportunities for each and every individual in the Hamden, North Haven, and Bethany communities. In fact, the Y in Hamden will start an Adaptive Aquatic program, as of January 2, 2012 that will deliver one to one instruction in a group swim lesson setting.

Andy Scherer, Director of Aquatics and Competitive Swimming for the Hamden-North Haven YMCA, describes the program as, “An inclusive program that focuses on nurturing swim skills and water safety for children with special needs”. He continues by saying, “Aside from building swimming skills, an emphasis will be placed on increasing general flexibility, balance, range of motion, muscle tone and coordination, and general social skills”.

While focusing on each child’s unique individual need(s), the Adaptive Aquatic program looks to serve children up to 12 years old with emotional, behavioral, and physical special needs within the community. Registration for the program starts December 12, 2011 and will run Tuesday evenings, Wednesday evenings, and Saturday mornings.

For questions or to register for the program, contact Andy Scherer at 203 248 6361 or AScherer@cccymca.org.
